Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...
Harvesting at VOH Kitwe
Recently, VOH Kitwe shared with you the blessing of a donation of a greenhouse and Bore hole water system with a 10,000 litre tank. Today, we have launched the harvesting season from our greenhouse!
It is amazing what this greenhouses can do. It has not been long since we planted 370 small tomato plants, and now all of them have produced and it is harvesting time!
We package them and the houses are the first to receive and what remains we take to see at the local market. There is a shortage of tomatoes in the area and the few available at the local market are selling at a high price, so we are pricing ours very competitively and our tomatoes are a very popular item!
Everyone is amazed at how fast the crop has come up and the youth are learning a lot about gardens and small business as part of the process.
Spiritual Emphasis at VOH Chongwe
Last week VOH Africa Director Sergio Bersaglio led a two day Spiritual Emphasis week for the VOH Chongwe Staff. The Staff were touched by his inspiring message about following Jesus Christ themselves and making followers of Christ as they interact with the children each day.
Meet Kerry and Penina
VOH Kenya would like to introduce brother and sister, Kerry and Penina. They are celebrating being a part of the VOH Kenya family for a year! Kerry and Penina’s father and brothers were killed during the post-election violence of 2008.
Their mother was left a widow with three children to look after. Unable to find employment, she woke up very early each morning, leaving her children with a neighbour, and walked around Obumba trying to find some casual work for the day. She struggled, finding it very difficult to be able to pay school fees, buy food, and provide shelter.
With nowhere else to turn she asked if her two youngest children could move to VOH Kenya. The children were welcomed into the Homes where they quickly fit in and started their free education at Hope Academy.
Today, Kerry is 9 years old and in grade 2 and Penina is 8 years old and in Kindergarten. They are both happy and healthy, and love being part of the VOH Kenya family!
VOH Malawi Family Photos
Last week at VOH Malawi, family photos were taken of each home. Group photos of all staff and all children were also taken and it was a lot of fun for everyone! In this photo is Mother Mary Sandala standing proudly with her 8 children: Asha, Emily, Keme, Mary, Praisewell, Mphatso, Adam and Sofina. Asha (back row, far right) is our most recent high-school graduate and has been substitute teaching in our grade one class until Miss Jane returns from maternity leave.
VOH Africa Director Visits Mongu
VOH Africa Director Sergio visited VOH Mongu last week. He shared with all our staff about his recent trip to Isreal and what he learned about leadership, shepherds, discipling, children, and God. Everyone enjoyed having him with us once again.
Christmas Break at VOH Mwanza
The children at VOH Mwanza are now on a Christmas break from school. They have been helping out at their homes and around the Village. Even when doing chores, the kids still find ways to have a good time—these two were having some fun with the wheelbarrow after delivering some vegetables to the children’s homes!
VOH Zimbabwe Students 97% Pass Rate
Students at VOH Zimbabwe Cornelius Hope Academy are rejoicing again this year as they just received news they had a 97% pass rate in the national grade seven exams. The students were dancing and cheering when they were given the news!
