Maize for Malawi: this week at VOH Africa

Welcome to our weekly news roundup! Here we share stories from each of our Villages about our Programs, celebrations, children, and staff. If you’d like to receive these updates via email, please subscribe to our newsletter.

Malawi: Maize for Malawi

After a very successful “Maize for Malawi” campaign put on by Calvary Pentecostal Church (CPC) in Strathroy, Ontario, VOH Malawi has much to be thankful for! In response to Thanksgiving 2017, CPC raised enough money to buy 150 bags of maize to be given out to the students at The Kauma Project. That’s enough for every child to take one home. Each bag weighs 50kg (110lbs) and will feed the average family for an entire month. Thank you, CPC!

Upcoming Event: Don’t forget to get tickets to An Evening of Hope!

Burundi: Welcoming Ange

VOH Burundi would like you to meet Ange! Sadly, Ange’s mother is partially paralyzed and also mentally challenged and her father is unknown. Because of her challenges, Ange’s mother is not able to work.

We are so thankful we have been able to help this family by welcoming Ange to our school and feeding program. We will also provide any medical care she may need. Ange continues to live with her mother and the friend who has been taking care of them both, but she is happy to also be a part of the VOH family!

Recently Ange recited the Lord’s Prayer for her fellow pupils in Preschool, and our hearts were all touched to see the joy and know the comfort she has found at Village of Hope.

Chongwe: National Teacher’s Day

Recently teachers in Zambia celebrated National Teacher’s Day. We are thankful that once again this year our VOH Chongwe teachers were able to take part and join teachers from different schools in our district. The day’s celebrations focus on the very important role teachers play in a child’s life and thanking them for their commitment to improving the lives of children in Africa!

During the day there were speeches that reminded teachers of the importance their roles play in helping equip children for life.

Kitwe: Catching up with Patrick

Meet Patrick, he graduated from VOH Kitwe in 2012. Despite the struggles and challenges that Patrick faced in life, he worked hard and made the most of the opportunities given to him through the ministry of Village of Hope.

After completing grade 12 and attending one of our school business expos, Patrick decided to start a small grocery business in Racecourse compound which neighbours our Village.

We keep in touch with Patrick and paid him a visit this past week. Patrick is now married with a small boy. He is doing well and his business allows him to support his family. He is also looking after his widowed Mother and his siblings.

When we talked to him he let us know once again how much he appreciates what VOH has done for him and that he hasn’t forgotten his sponsor, Westedge Community Church!

Mongu: Getting Creative!

Our creative department at VOH Mongu is absolutely exploding! We started teaching musical instrument lessons, photography skills, and video making techniques to our students who have an interest in these areas. We are so excited to help them explore their giftings and to see how they use their talents!

Mwanza: Meet Mussa

VOH Mwanza would like to introduce you to Mussa. Mussa is 5 years old and lives at VOH Mwanza, in Bethany House. Since our Village currently has more boys than girls, Mussa lives in a house with all boys (8 in total!) along with their housemother, Helena.

Mussa is the youngest boy in the house and has many older brothers to look up to. He goes to school onsite and is finishing Kindergarten. He likes playing outside with his friends and loves playing soccer. He is a very sweet boy with a big smile!

Zimbabwe: Dee’s Transformation

Meet Dee, one of the youngest girls at VOH Zimbabwe. Dee is 4 years old and she moved into one of the children’s homes at the Village last year. She is a real bubble of joy, always smiling and greeting everyone she meets. This picture was taken as she walked to her preschool class at the Village.

Since coming to Village of Hope from a very rough background, Dee has transformed into a joyful child with hopes for a bright future! Dee’s favourite pastime is playing with dolls with her friends.
