Update from VOH Burundi
Conservation Farming at VOH Chongwe
Life at VOH Kenya
The children’s homes at VOH Kenya are situated on a beautiful plot of land surrounded by sugarcane and rice fields out in rural Obumba, near Kisumu. The homes are very self-sustaining and the children take part in looking after the animals and shamba (gardens) that feed the homes and school.
At a young age, the children learn how to separate the beans from the pod and prepare them for cooking, and how to chop and prepare sukuma wik (literally translated ‘stretch the week’), a dish of kale, onions and oil.
VOH Kenya believes by teaching the children the important skills that are traditional to their area, they will feel more confident and capable today and in the years to come!
VOH Kitwe’s New Greenhouse
This week VOH Kitwe was visited by the Amiran Company who supplied us with our first greenhouse. They came to affirm their commitment and they also came with their Agronomist who will be giving us his expertise. We are planning for a second green house, which will be set-up in a month.
When the new greenhouse is done, the Agronomist will be coming once a week to make sure we produce a good yield.
During their visit, they also presented some supplementary readings. These books will provide teachers and children with an interactive and entertaining tool to learn more about the environment and the important role each has to play in preserving our natural resources. This initiative will influence the children on the effective use of water and how to grow more with less!
VOH Malawi Choir Sings for EU Delegation
On Europe Day the European Union Delegation to Malawi asked our VOH Malawi choir to help celebrate the occasion. Twenty of our children sang the Malawian National Anthem and the European Union Anthem and 2 other songs in front of 500 people at the celebration.
Both the Malawian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the EU Ambassador publicly congratulated them on such a fine job. We are so proud of them and equally important, they were so proud of themselves!
Medical Care at VOH Mongu
Last week two short term volunteers who are helping at VOH Mongu, Dr. Nilene and Megan, who is an Occupational Therapist, took a team to State Ranch in the Shangombo area, 340 km South West of Mongu, for a medical outreach.
The nearest medical care from this area is a 4-hour walk to a small clinic which is poorly stocked and provides services for a population of 14,000 people. In 4 days they treated over 600 patients with various conditions including malaria, eye infections, tooth abscesses, wounds, pneumonia, and tonsillitis.
They also provided HIV testing, therapy for stroke patients and the elderly, and they dewormed all the children from the local school.
The team enjoyed evening church services around the fire. What a blessing to love and serve a community in this way!
Birthday Party at VOH Mwanza!
All of the younger kids at VOH Mwanza had a special treat when one of their fellow students at school decided to come celebrate her birthday with all of them! This little girl attends our school and decided she wanted to bring a cake and juice and celebrate with her friends from the Village.
Her parents also brought a small donation of various food items. Of course the kids love any reason to celebrate and it was a great time! We’re so thankful for people like this who are part of our community and who truly care about the children that live here at VOH Mwanza.
Bibles for VOH Zimbabwe
VOH Zimbabwe was blessed by the Mission Zimbabwe team when they brought Bibles for our children and youth. They also brought enough Bibles for us to be able to distribute them amongst the rural churches working with VOH Zimbabwe.
