This Week: mPox Prevention

This week at VOH Africa, we fought malnutrition and partnered with the Ministry of Health to prevent Mpox.

VOH Bulale: Learning About God’s Love

This week at VOH Bulale, we were graced with a special guest from Canada. The visitor captivated the children with an inspiring talk on God’s unconditional love and grace, sharing the bible story of Mephibosheth and King David.

The children listened intently to the story, reminding them of the powerful message of compassion and divine love. The heartfelt words resonated with everyone, reinforcing the importance of embracing God’s love and extending it to others.

The chapel also celebrated those who have September birthdays. The joyous occasion was marked with songs, cakes, and heartfelt wishes, creating an atmosphere of warmth and unity.

It was a day to remember, filled with spiritual growth, community bonding, and joyous celebrations!

VOH Bwiza: Preventing Malnutrition

According to UNICEF, malnutrition plays a crucial role in infant mortality and morbidity. The result of an unbalanced diet in both quantity and quality is a significant problem, particularly in developing countries.

In addition, unsanitary living conditions weaken children’s immune systems and expose them to the risk of chronic intestinal inflammation. This syndrome is now recognized as one of the leading causes of infant malnutrition.

Burundi is currently listed as the poorest country in the world (source), making malnutrition a significant threat.

At VOH Bwiza, we are grateful to provide the children in our care with two meals per day, balanced in both quality and quantity. These meals are often the only meals the child will have in a day.

We are incredibly grateful to all of the children’s sponsors and our faithful donors. Your support enables us to provide this essential care.

VOH Chongwe: Meet Jannet

Jannet recently joined VOH Chongwe as our Child Safeguarding Officer. The CSO has a crucial role because their responsibility is to ensure every child who comes to our centre feels safe and protected.

Jannet is fitting in well with our staff and has demonstrated her ability to connect with the children.

We are committed to protecting all the children in our care and we are thrilled to have Jannet join our team to help fulfill that commitment.

VOH Kitwe: Chapel Service

Chapel is always an exciting time for both learners and the teaching staff at VOH Kitwe. It’s a time to reflect on the love of God and His teachings.

During the service, the children are given an opportunity to do Bible reading, share memorized scriptures, sing and perform skits.

This week, our high school students were full of excitement when they shared in songs of praise. Different classes ministered to their friends through singing, dancing and poems.

It’s wonderful to see how the children are able to share the gospel and their love of Christ in different ways!

VOH Malawi: Discipleship Training

We are thrilled to see our discipleship club at VOH Malawi continue to grow and thrive. Over the past few weeks, our Director and Administrator have been training staff on how to effectively lead discipleship sessions, with the goal of creating a sustainable program that staff can carry forward.

This week, we witnessed the results of that training, as our staff confidently took the lead and engaged the children in learning.

The children participated enthusiastically, going through a Bible story and then acting out what they had learned. It was inspiring to watch them not only perform but also help each other get the details right, showing how deeply the message had resonated with them. This kind of engagement is exactly what we hope for, as it indicates that the lessons are sticking and becoming part of their hearts and minds.

We believe that as these children grow, the discipleship program will nurture them to develop Christ-like behaviours that they can carry with them into the community. We hope they will demonstrate unique character traits that reflect the values of VOH Malawi, both within our centre and beyond!

VOH Mongu: Handover Ceremony

This week, our VOH Mongu school held an inspiring handover ceremony, marking a significant milestone for our Grade 11 and 12 students. It is always heartwarming to witness such moments where the current leaders pass the mantle of leadership on to the next group.

This handover ceremony is not just a formality; it is a symbol of responsibility and excitement for the next generation.

For the younger students, seeing their elder brothers and sisters take on leadership roles is a powerful source of motivation. It encourages them to aspire to similar heights, knowing they have role models who have walked the same path.

The ceremony fostered a sense of unity, reinforcing the importance of leadership, service, and giving back to the community. Moments like these are crucial in shaping the character of the children at VOH, showing them that they, too, can grow into leaders who positively impact their community.

VOH Mwanza: Learning to Polish Shoes

At VOH Mwanza, we believe in providing students with skills that go beyond academic knowledge. This week, our grade six students had a unique session where they learned how to take care of their shoes.

The students were fully engaged as they learned how to polish their shoes, taking pride in their work. This simple yet impactful exercise gave them a sense of responsibility and a deeper understanding of self-care.

We are committed to teaching practical life skills that help our students grow into responsible and well-rounded individuals. This shoe care session is just one example of how we incorporate everyday lessons to prepare them for life beyond the classroom.

VOH Zimbabwe: Preventing Mpox

In a heartwarming display of community collaboration, the recent drive led by the Ministry of Health in partnership with our Hope Medical Clinic brought health to countless children in Zimbabwe.

This initiative aimed to combat the rising concerns of Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) among the younger population, highlighting the pressing need for preventive healthcare.

Trained health professionals engaged with children and their parents, imparting crucial information about Mpox, its symptoms, and the importance of early intervention.

Children were warmly welcomed into the clinic, where they received essential vaccinations that will serve as a barrier against infectious diseases. Alongside these essential immunizations, the children were provided with supplementary vitamin drops. These vitamins are vital for bolstering immune systems and ensuring they grow healthy and strong.

We believe that every child deserves a chance to thrive, free from the threats of preventable diseases. This collaboration with the Ministry of Health not only underscores VOH’s dedication to child health but also emphasizes the importance of partnerships in addressing public health challenges.
