Learning to Garden: this week at VOH Africa

Check out what’s been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa…

Zimbabwe: Learning to Garden

AT VOH Zimbabwe, one of the many things we work hard at teaching our children is how to work with their hands to help themselves and others. Part of that ongoing training includes how to plant, maintain, and ultimately harvest gardens. When the children end up eating the very things they worked to produce they experience first hand the value of their hard work!

Burundi: Meeting the Children’s Needs

At VOH Burundi, we hold regular meetings between our children and staff that allow the children a chance to talk to the adults about anything on their minds regarding their lives today as well as their futures. We find this builds a spirit of responsibility instead of feeling they are victims of adults’ decisions. There is always a lot of interaction and open conversation during these special times that we spend together.

Chongwe: Practicum Students

VOH Chongwe is proud to be chosen once again by the Ministry of Education and the Local Teaching College as one of the schools associated with their teaching practicum program! Pictured are the practicum students, who said they are happy to be able to work with us.

Kenya: Passing Inspection!

This week at VOH Kenya an inspection team visited. The team included members of the National Children’s Council in Nairobi, the Children’s Department from Kisumu County, and various Ministries of Government including Health, Education, Water & Sanitation, Environment, and Works. They came to tour and inspect our children’s homes and school.

This is the first time this team has come to see us in our remote community near the city of Kisumu. The government of Kenya has increasingly high standards for the care of orphaned children, especially those being cared for in children’s homes. Upon inspecting the homes, they found them to be within their approved standards of best practices for childcare facilities.

In remembrance of this special occasion, a tree planting ceremony was held. The team received Kenyan hospitality by the VOH Kenya staff who prepared a special luncheon. Winning the favor of this team holds a promise of more great things ahead for VOH Kenya.

Kitwe: Boxes of Love!

VOH Kitwe was once again happy to be part of the blessings sent in the Boxes of Love container from British Columbia! It is wintertime here in Zambia and the children were excited to receive warm clothing. Boys and girls from preschool to grade 12 all had a chance to receive several pieces of clothing. We are so grateful for these blessings, as VOH Kitwe staff we are always happy when we see the children excited and happy.

Malawi: Dumi and Uncle Jef!

This week at VOH Malawi 5-year-old Dumi paid the Village Director a visit at his office wearing a wig and proclaiming that he looked just like Uncle Jef! After a good laugh together and a high five for creative genius they took a couple of selfies together to share with you!

Mongu: Donations from South Africa

At VOH Mongu, two of our incredible volunteers from South Africa have started putting together a school library for our Village of Hope School from donations received from South Africa. They recruited help from some of the older kids living in our children’s homes to help organize and create library cards for all of the books. We are so excited to get this library together and make more and more resources available to our kiddos!

Mwanza: New Kitchen!

may.27.2016 MWANZA

At VOH Mwanza, we are happy to be able to use some extra project funds to build a new outdoor kitchen for our Primary school’s feeding program. Our mamas are excited to have a larger workspace and better facilities to cook for over 200 people every day. They do such a wonderful job and we’re thankful to be able to provide nutritious meals every day for our children and staff.
