Mongu: Micro-Business Training

04.22.16 MONGU

We recently had some very excited parents at our Save A Life program at VOH Mongu! Part of the program includes educating the caregivers on business skills and giving them an opportunity to start their own micro-business in Mongu. They are given the opportunity to determine what is in high demand in their area and are then given funds to start off their businesses. We then monitor their progress and help them continue growing their business through monthly visits and continued business lessons. This enables them to care for their young children once they are discharged from our feeding program and empowers them to be successful in their communities.

Pictured here is Prince, one of the sweet little boys in our program, with his mother and the supplies for her new micro-business, which she is setting up in the central hub of our local market. We are so excited to see little Prince flourish and his mother empowered to take proper care of her sweet family.

Burundi: Teenager Gathering

Last week VOH Burundi had an important event for our teenagers. As we know, the teenage years are an important time in young lives and can sometimes be hard for them to manage. Teenagers need lots of information during this transitionary period about their bodies and their health. This was the main goal of the outing we had with our teens.

All the girls were happy to receive good training and advice provided by our Administrator and her assistant. All the boys were listening and interacting with the head teacher and his assistant. The time together was well received and the teens expressed their appreciation that we took the time to teach them and to listen to them, answering any questions they had.

At the end of the day, we all had a great time playing games together!

Chongwe: End of Term Assembly

It was a happy day for our students at VOH Chongwe when their families and guardians were invited to attend the closing of first term assembly. Students presented poems, songs, and skits and the invited guests enjoyed themselves. Although school will be on break for the next month, the teachers are available for any students who need extra help and the clinic will also remain open. The feeding program will continue during the school break as well. There is still lots of activity around the Village!

Kenya: Construction Progress

Construction of the new ablution (washroom) block at VOH Kenya’s school is well under way with the foundation completed and the walls being built. The construction crew, along with the project manager, are working hard every day to see this project completed. As the school expands it’s program into new high school grades and adds more students, a sufficient number of proper washroom facilities are a definite must for the children.

Kitwe: Administrator Visit

VOH Kitwe was excited to receive the VOH Africa Administrator, Melissa Vecchiarelli, who came up to Kitwe from Lusaka to visit us. During her short stay, Melissa toured the Village and had a chance to meet with many of our children and staff. She also spent a day with the Kachimfya Youth and encouraged them to continue pursuing their plans and hopes for the future. Everyone was happy to meet and spend time with her.

Malawi: Dance Classes!

This week at VOH Malawi we were pleased to have a dance group join us from an international school in Lilongwe. They brought their best dancers to perform for us. VOH Malawi also featured some of our best dancers. The presentation included both traditional dances as well as modern dance.

Mwanza: Special Outing!

Each year at VOH Mwanza we hold an Awards Ceremony where we recognize our children who have performed exceptionally well in their studies that year and who have also been extremely helpful and respectful at home. Usually, each of these children receive a small gift. This year, however, we wanted to do something different that they weren’t expecting, so we planned a day trip for all those who won awards. The children, along with several staff members, all went to visit Saa Nane Island, an Island in Lake Victoria about a 10-minute boat ride from Mwanza. They went on a hike, saw some animals, and had a wonderful time. We are sure it’s something they will remember for a long time! We are thankful to be able to create some special memories for our children as they grow.

Zimbabwe: Sports Competition

VOH Zimbabwe believes that sports are an integral part of the development of our children. Just before the school break, we hosted 6 schools for a sports competition and we are excited to note that our school came in 2nd place! We value sports, healthy activity and learning to play well together and so we  make sure that our children are given lots of opportunities to be involved in these types of events.
