Empowering Girls: This Week at Villages of Hope

Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...

Empowering Girls

2015.10.23 KITWELast week at VOH Kitwe, our school joined with other schools in the area to commemorate the “Day of the Girl Child.” We were given a poem to recite; the theme of the poem was “Girls Speak Up.”

It was a wonderful opportunity to participate at the district level in this important event. The girls from our school were accompanied by four boys as a way of showing solidarity with what the theme was communicating. The report back from the event coordinators was that our girls really articulated their poem well, confidently and with conviction, and it was well received by all in attendance.

We are so proud of how well the girls performed, it was also a great time for our students to interact with other girls from other schools. Indeed it was a day of reinforcing the rich value of all girls.

VOH Burundi Preschool

2015.10.23 BURUNDIVOH Burundi is happy to introduce our new Preschool class that started in September! After being in school for just over a month, the children along with their teacher’s help are already able to write down some numbers and letters.

We consider this to be great progress for these young children. They all come from the very poor community of Bwiza, in Bujumbura where our Bwiza Center is located. None were able to afford preschool costs and could only hope to be able to start school in grade one when they became 7 years or older.

VOH Burundi is so happy to be able to give them this opportunity to go to school as young as 3 and 4 years old. We congratulate their teachers for the good work and we appreciate all the sponsors who are making this possible.

Sponsor Letters

2015.10.23 CHONGWELast week was letter-writing week! VOH Chongwe and the children were so excited to communicate to their sponsors and tell them about the start of the third term in school and the progress they have made so far.

The children are very aware of the fact it is their sponsor who helps make it possible for them to receive an education, complete with a nutritious meal each day. They welcome the opportunity to write and say thank you and are always really excited when they receive a letter back.

We thank the sponsors and partners for making such a difference in the children’s lives. // if you want to sponsor a VOH child, visit vohafrica.com/child-sponsorship

Cleaning Day!

2015.10.23 KENYASaturday is a busy day at the VOH Kenya children’s homes! It’s cleaning day and the children all take part in various chores including cleaning their bedrooms and other various age appropriate chores inside and outside of their home.

The house moms use cleaning day as an opportunity to teach their children responsibility and it allows the children an opportunity to know how good it feels when they see a job well done.

Christmas Letters for Sponsor

2015.10.23 MALAWIAt VOH Malawi we are already thinking about Christmas. All of the children are working hard to prepare Christmas letters to send home to their sponsors. They are all so careful, first writing it out in a notebook before copying it neatly so that every word to their sponsor is clear. If you are one of our sponsors please remember that the children are overjoyed when they receive a letter back from you! Why not consider sending a Christmas card to your sponsor child this year?

VOH Mongu Children’s Homes

2015.10.23 MONGUVOH Mongu childrens’ homes 5 and 6 are coming along well! The roof is going up this week because we are trying hard to get them ready before the rainy season comes. We are so grateful for the hard workers that continue to build these homes with pride and efficiency. We absolutely cannot wait to meet the children who will find support, love, and family within these walls.

VOH Mwanza School Expansion

2015.10.23 MWANZAWe’re very excited at VOH Mwanza about all of the construction that is going on! One of our major projects at the moment is expanding our school. We recently started construction to create 4 new classrooms for our school before next year. It means our grade three class is temporarily in the Hall for their classes–but they are doing well and we are very happy that in a few months we will have 4 beautiful new classrooms so our school can grow and reach out to more children in our community.

National Exams

2015.10.23 ZIMBABWEThe Grade Seven students at VOH Zimbabwe have begun writing their national exams. There are a lot of special instructions and study times leading up to these exams and once they begin, everyone around the Village focuses on being a source of encouragement to the children who are writing. The students have worked very hard and we are expecting great results again this year!
