VOH Kitwe Graduates Get Married: This Week at Villages of Hope

Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...

VOH Kitwe Graduates Get Married!

07.24 KITWE

VOH Kitwe has been in existence for over 16 years! As time goes on we are seeing many of our children establish themselves as adults. This week two of the first children to move into the children’s homes back in 1999 were married in a colorful ceremony. Naward and Jane grew up and went to school at VOH. Today Naward is working for a financial lending firm in Lusaka as a Supervisor and Jane has become a salon beautician.

We celebrate this special day with them and thank all those who support VOH and make stories like these possible!

VOH Burundi Students Return to School

07.24 BURUNDI

VOH Burundi children were finally able to head back to school after spending more than two months on a forced holiday as all schools in Bujumbura were closed due to the political crisis the country has been going through. The children have been meeting regularly at Bwiza Center, but it was wonderful to see our children leaving the Center and going back to school. We thank God that Schools are now open and all our children have resumed classes this week.

VOH Chongwe Crime Prevention

07.24 CHONGWE

At VOH Chongwe we treasure and acknowledge the importance of sports and physical activity for our children. It helps them develop a sense of friendliness towards one another as well as a sense of team spirit. Once again our children participated in the Crime Prevention Relay at the district level.

Crime Prevention is a program under the Zambia Police where they sensitize companies, schools, and NGO’s on issues of safety and security. Those who participated in this year’s relay included other Schools and Non-Governmental Organizations. Our Children came in first place and they were awarded with a trophy and a toy horn!

Meet Anita

07.24 KENYA

Meet Anita: she is a seamstress at VOH Kenya and works hard everyday to sew new uniforms. She also does sewing repairs on curtains, bedding, and other items that need repairing around the village. VOH Kenya holds sewing training sessions for young women who want to learn the trade and start their own business; any children who show interest in sewing are also given an opportunity to attend these training sessions.

As VOH Kenya continues to grow, we plan to have more programs like this one–to give our students access to the training and skills they need to succeed in their life journey!

VOH Malawi Grade 8 Graduation!

07.24 MALAWI
At VOH Malawi we celebrated the graduation of 12 of our students from grade 8. The occasion was marked with singing, dancing, speeches, and diplomas. We are so proud of what these children have achieved and we know they will continue to make us proud as they enter their high school years.

VOH Mongu Learns Fractions

07.24 MONGU

VOH Mongu was so happy to have Helen from George, South Africa, with us last week. She taught a fractions lesson to our grade 5-7 students using a cake for visualization. The students enjoyed this fun treat in Math as they learned. Helen used a chocolate cake to represent fraction pieces. The students were able to visualize the sizes of fractions as they cut the cake together. Following the lesson and after completing their classwork, the students enjoyed eating their lesson!

VOH Mwanza Soccer Tournament

07.24 MWANZA

During a recent school break, VOH Mwanza held our annual Battle of the Houses soccer tournament. It is an event that is always highly anticipated each year. All the houses form teams that compete in a daylong tournament and prizes are given out at the end of the day to the winning house, but also to individual children for various accomplishments (sportsmanship, MVP, best goalie, etc.).

Canaan House took the win for the second year in a row and they are the reigning champions to beat next year! They got a trophy and their picture will be displayed with that trophy in the office until next year’s tournament. Everyone had a wonderful time–and even a couple of our mamas won awards for being the most enthusiastic cheerleaders! It was a great day.

New Equipment for VOH Zimbabwe Clinic

07.24 ZIMBABWE

VOH Zimbabwe’s nurse was very happy to receive a new autoclave machine for sterilization at the clinic. We are thankful for this gift as it will make the nurse’s job easier and will allow more time for her to care for the children and staff when they come to have their medical needs met.
