Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...
New Library for VOH Kenya
After one year of planning and preparing, VOH Kenya opened the doors to the new school library to the children and teachers! For some children at VOH Kenya, this is their first time entering a library. With books on space and science, math and language, animals and insects, novels and fiction, weather and environment, children will have access to much information and have the opportunity to sit, enjoy a good story, and develop a love of reading.
VOH Kenya would like to thank all the generous people who contributed into making this library a reality!
VOH Chongwe Education
VOH Chongwe believes in providing a high quality of care to the children that we are entrusted with. For this reason, we continually find ways to provide capacity building training for all of our caregivers. This week our school was blessed to have an expert, Mrs. Patricia Mwanza, from the Ministry of Education come to train our teachers on a program called “Time to Learn.” The focus of the training was to highlight key factors on how to develop effective lesson plans, and to catch up with the new curriculum and literacy lessons.
The training will ultimately benefit our students by helping them understand and grasp sounds for effective reading and writing as well as facilitating improved teacher-pupil interactions.
Lwipa’s Story
Maize Harvest at VOH Malawi!
The maize harvest has come in and already the next planting season has begun! Our gardeners Gilbert and Yosiphat are working hard to prepare the fields. Soon we will see the fruit of their labors as tomatoes, cabbage, onions, lettuce, Chinese lettuce, mustard, spinach, eggplant, chomollier and cornflower all begin to peek out of the freshly churned soil.
Please join us as we pray for a bountiful harvest!
Micro-Business Training at VOH Mongu
At the VOH Mongu Save a Life feeding program, we are able to provide each guardian with the opportunity to start their own micro-business. This helps ensure that when the child is discharged from the program the family is still able to provide the necessary food.
It is always fun going to the market and seeing the anticipation they have for starting a business. The guardians spend time choosing which food will best sell in their community including rice, eggs, cooking oil, and kapenta (dried fish).
Guardians always enjoy trips to the market and leave feeling empowered and excited about their new business!
VOH Mwanza Monthly Purchasing
The end of the month and heading into a new month is always a busy time around VOH Mwanza. One of the biggest jobs at this time is monthly purchasing, where we purchase many of our staple items for the month in bulk. It’s a cheaper way to buy some of the items we need around the Village. Each Mama comes to get her bulk items for the month and our kids help out too! We give grocery money separately to the mamas so they can buy fresh produce, meat and fish throughout the month.
New Books for VOH Zimbabwe!
Excitement was high at VOH Zimbabwe when brand new books arrived for the next school term. Thanks to special funds being sent from a church in Edmonton, our students received new textbooks! These books will be a huge blessing for them as they are taught in class and then later study their lessons.
We are grateful for our generous friends in Canada who play a big part in helping us provide for the children in our care.
