Feeding 700 at VOH Mongu: This Week at Villages of Hope

Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...

Feeding 700 at VOH Mongu

MONGUThis week, three thousand people helped pack 544,320 meals in Conway, Arkansas, USA! Through this Mobile Pack, they were able to pack enough meals to feed 1,491 children a meal a day for an entire year! Half of those meals are currently being shipped to Zambia to feed our precious children at VOH Mongu. We are so blessed by this support and care for the children here in Western Zambia.

Foundations for Farming

CHONGWEIt’s planting time again at VOH Chongwe! We are continuing to use the “Foundations for Farming” program in our gardens at the Village. We’ve had great success with this program in the past; it teaches us how to use basic techniques for planting, fertilizing, and watering our gardens. The kids and the mothers are happy to have this knowledge because the program can be implemented anywhere on any sized garden plot.

When they are older, the children will be able to easily grow vegetables for themselves because they have learned how to do it successfully while at VOH.

Guardians Visit VOH Kenya

KENYAThis week at VOH Kenya, guardians of the resident children were invited to hear about plans and changes at the Children’s Homes. The children’s choir performed some new songs for them and everyone appreciated the time afterwards to visit and spend time with one another.

It’s important to us that guardians have a chance to see how their children are doing, catch up on the latest news, and have time to ask questions and offer input into the lives of the children.

We are grateful the surrounding community cares for all of the children at VOH and supports what we are doing for them at the school and in the homes!

Emmanuel’s Story

KITWESeven year old Emmanuel was referred to VOH Kitwe by the Kitwe District Social Welfare Department when his father was admitted into the Kitwe Central Hospital after he suddenly collapsed. The Hospital Administration was unable to care for him when his father was hospitalized and unconscious. Emmanuel’s mother has passed away and therefore he has been travelling with his father on business trips, because there is no one to look after him at home. On this fateful day, the father developed a problem and collapsed on the journey and he was rushed to the hospital.

Emmanuel was kept with his father in the ward at first but when they realized the father was going to be in hospital for awhile they decided it would be better to place him in a temporary home where he would be well cared for.

Emmanuel stayed with us for two weeks before his father was well enough to come and collect him. It was such an emotional time for all of us who knew the story. In just a short time the child had become part of us and he fit in very well.

Although saying goodbye wasn’t easy, Emmanuel was happy to see that his father was well again and to go back home with him. We are very happy that we are able to provide a safe and loving home in times of crisis like these.

Penjani Visits VOH Malawi

MALAWIMeet Penjani. He used to be a professional barber until a severe case of meningitis left him completely deaf. Unable to continue his barber business, he was hired by VOH Malawi. Twice a day Penjani cooks the food for all the children in our feeding program, and quite often after he’s washed up you’ll find him giving our VOH kids professional haircuts!

Farewell, Mama Sandie!

MWANZALast week at VOH Mwanza we had a farewell celebration for ‘Mama Sandie.’ Sandie has been working at VOH Mwanza for several years now and she has poured her heart and soul into the Village and we will truly miss her. We are so grateful for Sandie’s generosity and service, she has definitely left her mark here and we know she will be remembered for many years to come at VOH Mwanza. The farewell was full of skits, dances, songs, and poems. It was a wonderful way to say thank you and not goodbye, but “See you later!”

Youth Week at VOH Zimbabwe

ZIMBABWEIt was Youth Week this week at VOH Zimbabwe. We spent the whole week focusing on our youth, teaching them life skills, and having lots of time to interact with one another. A local renowned young leader came to bring some teachings as well. Dr. Dzamara is 29 years old and his passion is leadership and working with youth. We were blessed to have him spend time with us!
