Construction at VOH Mwanza: This week at Villages of Hope

Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...

Construction at VOH Mwanza

IMG_0181VOH Mwanza is a very exciting and busy place lately! We have started two new construction projects. Our former baby home is being renovated to become three separate family style children’s homes and our former laundry area is being transformed into another children’s home. Today our Lead Team ended their weekly meeting by doing a walk-about to see all the progress on these projects. Things are moving quickly and we are so excited about these renovations. It might not look like much now but before we know it, we’ll have three new houses! We are very grateful for the donations that made these projects possible.

VOH Burundi Preschool Launch!

IMG_0183VOH Burundi is very happy and thankful to be able to open a preschool class this year. This is the first time we have been able to enrol preschool children and those in our community consider it a great blessing to be able to have their children begin schooling at this young age. The children already  know how to give greetings in both in Kirundi and French.

Meet the Chongwe Aunties

IMG_0184The Children’s Homes Aunties at VOH Chongwe work very hard with the moms to take care of the children. Last week they were thrilled to receive new outfits to wear so that their clothes don’t get dirty while they are busy cooking, washing and cleaning. The aunties and moms also ensure that the children in the homes help out with chores so that they are able to care for themselves when they are older. We are blessed to have such a great group of women caring for the children.

VOH Kenya Elections

IMG_0180This week, VOH Kenya held elections for youth council. Children in the upper-primary school had the opportunity to create posters and visit other classrooms to campaign for the positions they wanted to hold for the 2015/2016 school year.

Some of the positions available to the children were in health, education, security, sports, school speaker, and youth council president. The candidates wrote and practiced their speeches and expressed their passion for their area and ideas they had in mind.

Afterwards, the upper-primary school children all had the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate. The results will be in by the end of the week!

Gardening at VOH Kitwe

IMG_0182It’s rainy season in Zambia and at VOH Kitwe this is the best season for gardening. In addition to the usual tomatoes, lettuce, sweet potatoes, corn and beans we also plant different types of our traditional crops including ground nuts. We are using every possible space for the crops to supplement our budget and also to teach our children gardening skills!

Meet Mary…

IMG_0179Meet Mary, who as of February 1st has taken over the position as our Lead House Mother at VOH Malawi. Mary has served the last two years as deputy house mother and has now shifted into the lead mother position.

Every two years the position of deputy house mother comes up for transition and the mother’s all vote to install a new mum in the position. Then the current deputy moves up and the lead mum steps down.

Mary has been an excellent deputy and is trusted by everyone. We know she’ll do great as our lead house mother!

VOH Zimbabwe Assembly

IMG_0178The new school year has begun at VOH Zimbabwe and students attended a special opening assembly where they promised to keep the standards set up by the School Head.
