Education, Nutrition, Healthcare, Shelter
We believe in providing holistic (emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual) and loving care to vulnerable children. We do this through the various programs offered at each of our Village locations.
Education
According to UNICEF, most orphans and vulnerable children have their education interrupted due to life circumstances. UNICEF states, “Orphans are less likely to be in school and more likely to fall behind or drop out, compromising their abilities and prospects.” We respond to these critical issues by providing free education from preschool to grade 12. The children and youth attending a VOH school are taught from local government curriculum and write government exams. The schools also provide the opportunity to be involved in sports, music and other extra-curricular activities providing a well-rounded education for the students.
Attending school brings hope for a future to each VOH child.

Nutrition
According to a UNICEF study on nutrition, households affected by HIV/AIDS experience a drop in food consumption, which puts children (orphans in particular) at a higher risk of malnutrition. Additionally, a 2013 study found the introduction of school feeding programs resulted in an increase of annual attendance from 69% to 98%.
At Villages of Hope, we offer a High Energy Protein Supplement (HEPS) or equivalent meal daily. Through this program, we can prevent malnutrition from inhibiting the development and education of the children in our care.

Healthcare
The United Nations states, “Children whose parents have already died are disadvantaged in numerous and often devastating ways. In addition to the trauma of witnessing the sickness and death, they are likely to be poorer and less healthy than non-orphans.”
At VOH Africa, we provide free medical care to over 3700 children. Several of the Villages have on-site clinics that provide basic medical care and where there is not yet a clinic, the children are taken to local clinics and their costs are covered.
We also provide children with treated mosquito nets. Treated nets are proven to be a very effective first line of prevention. In addition, malaria tests are given when a VOH child displays symptoms that could be malaria and if the test is positive treatment is started immediately.
Knowing they have help when they are sick brings tremendous relief to the VOH children.

Shelter
We want to do our part to make a difference in children’s lives, bringing hope where hope has been lost. The vision of Villages of Hope Africa is to see children loved and cared for so they will ultimately embrace adulthood as contributing members of society. Our children’s homes help us achieve this vision.
We currently provide shelter to approximately 450 children. If a child is left with no relative or guardian who can provide a home for them, we have family style homes where they can live in a safe and loving environment with siblings and a housemother.
A maximum of eight children live in each home and every home has a mother who lives with the children full time. The mother cares for the children’s needs, helps them with their school work, teaches them how to help with basic chores around the home and provides spiritual and emotional guidance.
