Mosquito Nets for VOH Chongwe
Malaria continues to be a killer disease in Africa, claiming many lives, especially those under the age of five years. The Children’s homes at VOH Chongwe were blessed to receive new Mosquito nets that were donated by the Ministry of Health. It is rainy season in Zambia right now and the mosquito population is very high. Mosquito nets need to be replaced on a regular basis to ensure that they are in good condition and still providing protection from mosquitos. The Children and mothers were happy to have the nets as this will help in reducing Malaria cases in the homes. We are thankful to the Ministry of Health for supporting VOH in this vital way!

VOH Burundi Meets with Social Welfare
This past week VOH – Burundi, Director, Delson and members of the Burundi Staff received a delegation from the Ministry of social welfare. This visit was part of the ongoing process of solidifying the relationship between the Village and local government officials. We are thankful for the good working relationships that VOH enjoys in the countries where we are located.
VOH Kitwe Parents Get Involved
This past week at VOH Kitwe, school principal George Zyambo, requested that the student’s parents/guardians come and help work on the road outside of the Village. Rains have been very heavy this year and poor drainage was causing the road to flood making it difficult for the students who walk to school. Everyone at the Village was thankful for the positive response – There was a great turn out and those who came to help were happy to be a part of this project as a way of saying thanks to VOH for the help that they bring to the community!

Chicken Shopping at VOH Malawi
Once a month this cool motorcycle contraption arrives at VOH Malawi to deliver live chickens. The children love this day as they chase, pick up and help the moms carry their chickens home. Many of the children then help their moms prepare the chickens for the month. Some of the kids are better than others at catching and holding the chickens as you’ll see in the photo!

VOH Mongu and Zimbabwe Students Return to School
Students at VOH Mongu return to classes for the new school year. In Zambia, the academic school year runs from January to December so everyone is back in a new grade and excited to start the new year with their friends and teachers!
It’s back to school at VOH Zimbabwe where there are over 650 students attending classes from preschool to grade twelve. According to UNICEF’s state of the world’s children, “Most children whose parents are ill or deceased have their education interrupted”. UNICEF also states that “Orphans are less likely to be in school and more likely to fall behind or drop out, compromising their abilities and prospects”. ICYMI: Director’s Blog January 2014
My challenge to myself and to you is to fight the temptation to be busy for busyness sake. Take more time for relationship, things that cannot be measured in this lifetime. So in the midst of all that needs to be done this coming year, I hope to be able to keep things in perspective and never lose sight of this valuable truth Thomas Merton pointed out to me. I also hope to value others not based on what they do or accomplish, but on who they are as people… Read Here
