This Week: Hosting Career Day

This week at VOH Africa, we held a career day, harvested vegetables to sell and took part in a spelling bee!

VOH Bulale: Nurturing a Greener Future

At VOH Bulale, environmental conservation is not just a topic we teach; it’s a way of life. As teachers and staff, we prioritize training our students in the vital practices of protecting and preserving the environment.

One of our key initiatives is the Environment Club, which plays a pivotal role in our conservation efforts. Through this program, they gain practical skills and knowledge about environmental stewardship.

Twice a week, club members visit the school to care for our young trees by applying manure and watering them. This consistent effort ensures that the trees survive and thrive, especially during the dry season and school breaks.

Hands-on experience allows our students to develop a deep understanding and appreciation for the environment.

We hope that these experiences will inspire some students to explore careers in natural tourism and other fields dedicated to environmental conservation.

Together, we are growing a greener future, one tree at a time!

VOH Bwiza: End of the Third Term

This week in VOH Bwiza, the end of the school year has come, and we’re preparing for our end-of-year ceremony. This is always an exciting time for students as they anxiously await their results.

The teachers are busy gathering everyone’s grades in time for the ceremony, during which students will be awarded for their achievements.

Meanwhile, the children are busy preparing songs, dances and other cheerful activities for the event.

We are so proud of our students!

VOH Chongwe: Musole’s Story

Meet 15-year-old Musole, one of the students at VOH Chongwe. Musole joined our school in 2022 in sixth grade. He is now in Grade 8 and always expresses gratitude for the opportunity to be in school.

Before coming to the VOH, Musole experienced various disturbances in his education, mainly due to his family’s financial circumstances. He is thrilled to receive free education at our centre and is looking forward to completing high school.

This week, Musole eloquently shared a sermon with his friends during the chapel, where he talked about the importance of thanksgiving for all that God had done and continues to do in the children’s lives.

We are glad that peer-to-peer discipleship is taking place in children’s lives, helping to mould their character after that of Jesus.

We wish Musole all the best in his education and character development journey!

VOH Kitwe: Income-Generating Initiatives

Over the years, VOH Kitwe has introduced local income-generating initiatives right at the centre. These initiatives sometimes succeed and always teach us lessons.

Meet Eliud, who joined our VOH family when he was in primary school. Today, he is a significant contributor to the success of our agriculture program, which is one of our income-generating initiatives.

This week, our agriculture department had a large harvest of vegetables that were ready for consuming and selling. The harvest included rape, carrots and Chinese cabbage. We also had chickens that were raised on-site and were ready for selling. Whatever we don’t need for the homes and feeding program is sold to raise money for the centre. VOH staff and members from the local community are our best and most loyal customers!

Eliud is grateful for the opportunity to work at VOH in our agriculture program–something that is teaching him skills he can apply for years to come. And we are incredibly grateful for Eliud and all his hard work!

VOH Luongo: Career Day

This week, VOH Luongo hosted a Career Day in conjunction with a teachers’ back-to-school event. During this engaging occasion, the children put on their chosen career uniforms while the teachers wore school uniforms.

It was an enlightening day. Each child had the opportunity to articulate the motivations behind their chosen career path. The children were excited to imagine their futures and share their dreams with their peers.

Those aspiring to be nurses highlighted how they aim to serve their community by providing high-quality healthcare services. The future soldiers conveyed their dedication to protecting their nation and its people.

We were honoured to have esteemed professionals such as a qualified Engineer surveyor from Kitwe City Council, a dedicated clinic officer from Kitwe Teaching Hospital, a compassionate nurse from VOH clinic, and a committed lecturer from Copperbelt University.

Each of them shared their journeys that led them to their current careers. Furthermore, they emphasized how they integrate their faith into their professional lives.

Witnessing the ambitious children of VOH Luongo aspiring to contribute positively to their community and the nation at large is truly inspiring.

A big thanks to the teachers for organizing this impactful event and to all of our professional guests!

VOH Maramvya: Studying for Exams

The children at VOH Maramvya are gearing up for end-of-year final exams before heading off for their summer holidays.

The final exams represent a crucial step in assessing the children’s progress and skills after a well-rounded school year. The children are diligently preparing and studying and their teachers are helping them prepare.

Exams give the children the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout the year and demonstrate their academic growth and development.

Once exams are over, the children will be able to fully enjoy their well-deserved summer holidays, relaxing and having fun after a year of hard work and determination!

VOH Mwanza: Empowering Teens for a Brighter Future

Teenagers today face so many challenges, from hormonal changes to environmental influences and peer pressure. It’s a tough time, and they’re at high risk of picking up bad habits.

We’ve been working hard at VOH Mwanza to provide a solution that helps our teens navigate this critical period. We recently organized a Teenager Workshop Training session designed to equip teens with essential life skills.

These workshops focus on helping them understand how to behave during this sensitive period of growth and stay focused on their personal goals.

The response was incredible! Our teens were so excited and actively participated by sharing their challenges with one another. It was inspiring to see them open up and support one another.

They’ve told us how much this workshop positively impacted their lives, giving them the tools they need to make better decisions and build a brighter future. There will definitely be more events like this in the future.

VOH Zimbabwe: Spelling Bee

Recently, at VOH Zimbabwe, we hosted another spelling bee competition where more than 20 schools participated.

Spelling bees are a fantastic way to help children improve their spelling and vocabulary skills, boost their confidence, practice public speaking and learn positive sportsmanship. Events like these provide a platform for students to showcase their talents and foster a sense of community involvement, school pride, and academic success.

The participation of numerous schools adds to the diversity of the competition, creating a rich learning environment where students can learn from each other’s strengths and challenge themselves to excel.

Moreover, the impact of such events extends beyond the competition itself. They can inspire a love for language and learning that lasts a lifetime. They encourage students to embrace the value of education and strive for excellence in all areas of their academic journey.

We are grateful that the organizers chose our centre to host this event!
