VOH Bwiza (Burundi) Update: Writing to Sponsors

Bwiza teacher translating sponsor letter from child

It’s letter-writing time at VOH Bwiza! Our children always enjoy writing to their sponsors, letting them know how they are doing, and thanking them for their loving support. The children write their letters in Kirundi, our local language, and the teachers translate them into English. We love helping the children share their thanks and experiences with their sponsors. We are so thankful for every sponsor who, through their support, helps make it possible for us to provide care for vulnerable children in our community of Bwiza!

VOH Chongwe (Zambia) Update: Discipleship Program

One of the ways we provide holistic care for our children at VOH Chongwe is through our discipleship program. This program cares for the children’s spiritual well-being. Our discipleship program was pioneered by our Executive Director, Uncle Serge. Our children are introduced to the Bible through this program and learn about God and His love for them. We provide many different ways for our children to learn and grow spiritually, including having activities like reading scripture, acting Bible stories, singing, watching videos, and having group discussions. Recently, the Government of Zambia, through the Ministry of Education, also introduced a Discipleship Program that focuses on the early childhood stage at all schools in Zambia. VOH Chongwe was chosen as a venue for the training of all of the teachers in our district. We are so privileged to host such a great event that we believe will have a positive impact on our entire nation!

VOH Kitwe (Zambia) Update: Practicing Hand Hygiene

Personal hygiene begins with clean hands. This week, VOH Kitwe taught handwashing with soap and water as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and ultimately save lives. Our children are regularly reminded by their teachers to wash their hands with soap and water. They now know this is an effective way to prevent the spread of infections and viruses, including influenza and COVID-19. Both staff and children appreciate how seriously we take hand hygiene at our centre!

VOH Luongo (Zambia) Update: Preparing for Government Exams

Two VOH Luongo students studying together

Our VOH Luongo grade 7 students will be writing their government exams soon. We are pleased to see how committed they are to their schoolwork and passing these critical exams! They come to school early in the morning before classes start to have extra time to review what they have learned throughout the year. Our teachers are happy to show up early, too, and make themselves available to their students and answer any questions they have as they study. One of the ways the students prepare is by reviewing all of the test papers they wrote throughout the year to make sure they remember and understand the things they learned. We thank our teachers for their hard work! Everyone is confident that VOH Luongo’s students will do very well once again!

VOH Malawi Update: Welcoming New Students!

VOH Malawi staff heading out to visit children in their homes

This week at VOH Malawi, we finalized our door-to-door household assessments for our new school intake. As we plan to reopen the school, we are thrilled to welcome new kids to our VOH centre! Each year our staff go into the community and visit the children in their homes to ensure we have a good understanding of the home that each child is coming from and any specific needs they may have. These new kids will join our school and other programs, including our feeding program. We look forward to seeing them experience the fun and excitement of being in school and making new friends!

VOH Maramvya (Burundi) Update: New Shoes!

Summer is over in Burundi, and we are embracing the rainy season! During the hot summer months, our VOH Maramvya children play many outdoor games that can be hard on their shoes, leaving them beyond repair. With this in mind, we do our best to provide new shoes for all our children at the beginning of each new school year. They always look forward to this exciting event! We want to thank our loving donors who make this special event possible.

VOH Mongu (Zambia) Update: Child Health Week

It’s Child Health Week at our VOH Mongu school! We love seeing the kids take part in this crucial health screening exercise. Our clinic staff works tirelessly to ensure each child receives a complete check-up and any special treatment they may require. The medical team asks the children about any bothersome symptoms they may be experiencing and gives them a chance to share any medical concerns. The kids are so thankful that we show such an interest in their physical well-being and are committed to ensuring they stay healthy.

VOH Zimbabwe Update: Dental Team Visit

Visiting dentist standing with VOH Zimbabwe staff with donated items

A few years back, VOH Zimbabwe was blessed by a visit from a dental team led by Dr. Huma. During that visit, they gave dental check-ups and performed basic dental work for all of our children. They wanted to visit again but have been unable to due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are thrilled that Dr. Huma has again been able to visit us at VOH Zimbabwe! This time she came on her own but brought some goodies for the children on behalf of the team that came with her last time. It was great to reconnect, and we were delighted to hear that the dental team plans to come again in the near future to follow up with the children!
