Distributing Mosquito Nets: this week at VOH Africa

Welcome to our weekly news roundup! Here we share stories from each of our Villages about our Programs, celebrations, children, and staff. If you’d like to receive these updates via email, please subscribe to our newsletter.

Malawi: Distributing Mosquito Nets

Recently at VOH Malawi, we had the pleasure of handing out mosquito nets to all of our children. Over 200 nets have been distributed this rainy season when cases of malaria are at their apex. A treated mosquito net is the best defence against this devastating disease. Globally, malaria infection rates have fallen by 29% since 2010 (according to the World Health Organization) and VOH strives to do its part by promoting prevention and best practices.

Burundi: Evelyne’s Story

VOH Burundi loves to celebrate the lives that have been changed through the ministry and care being provided! Evelyne, one of the first girls to enter our care back in 2009, is one of many testimonies of what God has done in children’s lives.

Evelyne first joined the VOH Burundi family when we learned that her mother was not able to care for her. Although a kind and generous friend from the community welcomed Evelyne into her home, she was not able to pay for Evelyne’s education or other basic needs.

Today Evelyne is in secondary school at VOH and is very committed to her education. She is full of hope and sees a bright future ahead of her!

Chongwe: Back to School after Cholera Outbreak

VOH Chongwe children are so excited to be back in school after the long break. The break started in December for Christmas and then continued through the New Year because of the cholera outbreak that Zambia recently experienced.

Many schools here in Lusaka and Chongwe didn’t meet the required health standards in the areas of hygiene and sanitation were not allowed to open. However, Health Inspectors from the District Health Office inspected our school and were happy with the findings. They certified and approved our school for reopening. We appreciate our school staff for maintaining our high health standards!

Kitwe: Welcome New Preschoolers!

VOH Kitwe would like you to meet our new 2018 preschool pupils. They are so happy to be in school and to find there are toys they can play with when they are in class! Here they are having fun with the teachers and their new friends at break time. We are grateful for the Evening of Hope donations that make this preschool enrollment possible!

Mongu: Back to School!

The children in the VOH Mongu Children’s Homes were so excited to go back to school this week! While they love being on holidays, when they start getting ready to go back to school, you can’t keep the smiles off their faces.

The kids love going back to school and seeing their friends, meeting their new teachers, and learning. We can’t wait to see what this year brings.

Mwanza: Acknowledging Our Staff

At the beginning of each new year at VOH Mwanza, we like to honour those staff members who have been serving our children faithfully and have reached the 10-year mark. This year we celebrated 6 women (Housemothers and Aunties) who reached this milestone by the end of 2017. They have watched the children grow and been there every step of the way to guide them. We’re so thankful for loyal, hard working staff who truly care about our children!

Zimbabwe: Tinashe Receives a Scooter!

Tinashe is one of our children at VOH Zimbabwe. Sadly, he has muscular dystrophy. Here Tinahse is seen enjoying his newly donated battery operated scooter. Now he does not have to be pushed around by anyone in a wheelchair. He is free to go where he wants without relying on anyone to take him.

This has really brightened his face and when you speak to him, he is very excited about it and it has lifted his spirits!
