Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...
Frederic Gets his Diploma!
VOH Burundi is happy to celebrate with Frederic, who has been with us since VOH Burundi began back in 2009.
After working hard to graduate from grade twelve Frederic has excelled at technical school and now has a diploma in building and plumbing. He loves working with his hands and is a gifted builder.
Frederick will be working at VOH Burundi’s Bwiza centre for 6 months in order to earn some funds to establish himself and to purchase his own tools.
Cyriaque, the head teacher at VOH Burundi who was providing tutoring to Frederic, is happy and proud of Frederic’s achievements and together they proudly display Fredric’s diploma!
Psychosocial Counseling Certificates
VOH Chongwe mothers are happy to receive their Certificates after successfully being trained in Psychosocial Counseling. They feel more empowered and confident than ever to be able to take care of the children in their homes.
Welcome Billy, Sylvia, and Fabien!
VOH Kenya would like to introduce three new children: Billy, Sylvia and Fabien. All three children are now living in the VOH Kenya Children’s Homes and attending classes at Hope Academy. These children have come from very difficult and challenging backgrounds, but we are already seeing slow and steady improvements and changes in their confidence and attitudes as they become friends with the other children in their new home, enjoy safety and security at the Village, and begin attending school.
We look forward to getting to know them more each day and helping them see hope for their futures!
National Youth Day!
Last week at VOH Kitwe, children, youth and staff–worked together slashing the grass, which grows quickly during rainy season.
March 12th, the day before slashing day, was National Youth Day, and a public holiday in Zambia.
All youth in Zambia are encouraged to participate in different activities that will showcase their talents and skills. The focus of Youth Day is to encourage youth to work hard and to refrain from bad behaviour. Our Kachimfya Youth group participated in the slashing and were excited to be be able to do so in recognition of Youth Day!
Lions Club visits VOH Malawi
VOH Malawi had a special visit from the Lilongwe Lions Club. They blessed us with a donation of 50 loaves of bread, 100 pencils, several stacks of exercise books, new chalk and chalk brushes for all of our classrooms, and two new soccer balls!
The kids were really excited about the balls, the house mums were grateful for the bread, and the school was thrilled by the school supplies.
After singing some songs and playing “Simon Says” we headed out to the soccer pitch for a friendly game of soccer. Our friends from the Lions Club joined in and the VOH kids showed them their best moves. It was great fun!
At the end of the afternoon we thanked them graciously for an afternoon of blessing and fun–we can’t wait for their next visit.
Learning about Bodies at VOH Mongu
The Kindergarten classes at VOH Mongu are enjoying learning about all of the different parts of their bodies. They made great drawings of themselves and were proud to show them off!
VOH Mwanza Awards Ceremony
At the very end of February we held our Annual Awards Ceremony at VOH Mwanza. At this event we recognise the students who performed the best in each class as well as give out several “House Awards.” Each house votes and chooses the winner for each of the following awards: Best Cook, Best Cleaner, Most Helpful, and Most Disciplined.
It was a wonderful day with many awards given out and everyone got a soda, which is always a treat!
All the children were encouraged to continue working hard both at school and at home. We were thankful to our “Mwenye Kiti” (Community Magistrate/ Government Representative) who came out to support us by being our Guest of Honour–handing out the awards with our Director and giving a motivational speech to our kids.
Discussing Futures at VOH Zimbabwe
Denzel and Kuda live in Children’s homes at VOH Zimbabwe. They are both in grade two and they are best friends. The boys are often found together during play time and recently, they were found having a serious looking conversation. When they were asked, they said they were busy making plans about what they want to do when they are older. We are thrilled to see that the children have hope and confidence that they will have a bright future!
