Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...
VOH Mwanza Scholarships
On October 22nd VOH Mwanza was excited to welcome Senior Staff from Mkombozi Commercial Bank to come and present three of our secondary students with scholarships as part of a program they have to help orphans.
As part of their ‘Cooperate Responsibility’ they have developed a program to help orphaned children get a good education. They met with our leadership and together chose three of our top performing secondary students to sponsor. They will be funding all of their school fees through the end of High school and even beyond should the students get accepted to a University.
There are even placement and job opportunities with the bank in the future. What a wonderful program–and so exciting to see companies right here in Tanzania standing up to help children in their own communities. We are excited about the beginning of this new local partnership and we pray more businesses and companies will follow in their steps in the future.
VOH Burundi Wedding
In Burundi, especially in the shanty compound of Bwiza where VOH is located, most of the couples are not legally married, instead they are just married through a traditional ceremony.
There are many disadvantages to this including that the wife is not recognized by the government or the family. That is a big struggle for the children when the parents are no longer together, either by choice or through the death of the father. The children are the first victims of this insecure situation.
This was the case for Leontine, the VOH Burundi Auntie and her husband. We advised them to be legally married and we are happy to say they agreed and are now legally wife and husband!
New Admin Building for VOH Chongwe
At VOH Chongwe we are happy to see construction of our newest building underway. When complete, this building will provide new administration offices for the Director, Administrator, Bookkeeper, and the Receptionist/Clerk.
The building that the Administration is currently using will become a new, larger classroom for our Preschool class. We expect the new offices to be completed by the end of January.
Studying Hard at VOH Kenya
The last day of the school year at VOH Kenya is November 13th and for the last several weeks, the students, all the way from nursery to grade 7, have been working hard, studying, and preparing for their end-term exams that started this week.
The younger classes will be tested on their number recognition, identifying the letters in the
alphabet and their sounds, matching pictures to words, etc. The lower primary students will be tested in all their subjects for that term: math, science, English, Swahili, Christian religion education, socials.
We are always proud of the VOH Kenya children and the dedication they give towards their studies!
Independence Day Celebrations!
VOH Kitwe joined the rest of the Nation of Zambia to celebrate 50 years of independence. The school children and staff gathered together to enjoy the day. The children enjoyed singing and dancing in groups. They wore the Nation colors and painted faces. It was a grand time for everyone!

19 students from VOH Mongu’s Culture Club enjoyed celebrating Zambia’s 50th Golden Jubilee on the country’s Independence Day. The students attended activities at the stadium and were even allowed to dance for the crowd. Afterwards they enjoyed scones and a cool drink at a nearby restaurant. It was a special day for everyone as the kids’ excitement, singing, and dancing never wavered.
