Youth Gardening: this week at VOH Africa

Welcome to our weekly news roundup! Here we share stories from each of our Villages about our Programs, celebrations, children, and staff. If you’d like to receive these updates via email, please subscribe to our newsletter.

Kitwe: Youth Gardening

Last week VOH Kitwe’s Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) students harvested maize from their garden. It was a good yield!

These gardens provide an opportunity for practical agricultural lessons with hands-on experience. Students even learn how to use organic manure instead of chemical manure.

Pictured is Charles, one of our YEP volunteers, and some of the students busy harvesting the maize and distributing it to the children’s homes. Mothers and children are excited to receive the produce and see what our youth are able to accomplish!

Burundi: Child Protection Training

This week, VOH Burundi conducted Child Protection Training workshops for the children’s guardians and caregivers. Ninety-percent of our children live in the surrounding community where Child Protection is not taught. We are conscious of this and intentionally work hard to help the guardians understand this important topic.

Through our training, we discuss ways we can best raise our children together and ensure they grow up in a loving environment.

Chongwe: Writing to Sponsors!

It’s the beginning of the first school term at VOH Chongwe and our children who have sponsors are busy writing letters to them. The children are always so excited to communicate with their sponsors and inform them how the school recess was and how they are doing in their new grades.

We thank every sponsor for your assistance in providing care for the children of VOH! Only 40% of our VOH Chongwe children are currently sponsored, if you are interested in helping, you can visit our website and sign up to sponsor a VOH Chongwe child: https://vohafrica.com/child-sponsorship

Mongu: Meet Teacher Sharon

The new preschool students at VOH Mongu are learning so much at their new school. They all adore their teacher, “Teacher Sharon.” They particularly enjoy song time! Teacher Sharon is working with them on colours and shapes. They are also learning to line up in a single-file line for lunch. Teacher Sharon says the students are doing great!

Mwanza: Welcoming a Special Visitor

This week at VOH Mwanza we welcomed back a special visitor, Ron Posein. Ron is the former director of the village. Ron came back to Mwanza for a visit and was able to spend a day at VOH.

Our staff and children were able to visit and pray with him and everyone was excited to see him again. Ron was excited to see the growth and changes that have taken place over the past few years.

We are glad to be able to honour those who have gone before us and laid the foundation for the ministry we are doing today.

Zimbabwe: Learning About Child Abuse

The Family Support Trust, a local NGO, visited VOH Zimbabwe recently and had a talk with the caregivers about child sexual abuse. They talked about types, causes, and signs of abuse in children and where to seek help when it happens. It was a very informative session that was a part of our ongoing training in Child Protection and will help us continue to raise our children in a loving and safe community.
