Linily Achieves Her Dream: This Week at VOH Africa

Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...

Linily Achieves Her Dream!

20.11.2015 KITWEVOH Kitwe exists to bring hope to orphans and vulnerable children so they will ultimately become contributing members of society. Today we were very excited to receive a visit from one of our former students, Linily Namusokwe. Linily completed grade 12 in December 2012 and not long after completion was able to enroll at a local Trade School to study Electrical Engineering. She was very committed and hard working at school and has just completed her course. She stopped by to say thank you for all that she learnt at VOH. Without that foundation she says, she would not have been able to continue on and receive training to work in her chosen field.

Linily is now able to support herself and is also helping take care of her family. She is so grateful to all those that helped make this possible!

Teacher Planning Meeting

20.11.2015 BURUNDIWith exams just around the corner, VOH Burundi teachers and tutors held a special planning meeting. The meeting was led by our senior teacher and the focus of the meeting was on ways we could help students receive the best possible results from the coming exams. They all agreed to make themselves available at the Bwiza Center on Saturdays for any students who want extra help wrapping up their schoolwork for the term and preparing for their exams. We are so happy to once again see how much the staff care about the children and how important it is to them to see the children succeed!

VOH Chongwe Reading Program

20.11.2015 CHONGWEThis past week at VOH Chongwe there was a new program launched for the early grades that will help enhance reading skills. The ministry of Education is conducting a pilot program called “time to learn” and chose our school to be the test location. The Ministry of Education has also provided the tablets being used. The program is conducted in our local language, which is also helping students improve their literacy abilities.

Homemade Toys

20.11.2015 KENYAThe kids at VOH Kenya are very creative, and are especially good at knowing how to create art from things found in nature. These two boys were more than happy to show off their model cars made completely from the materials found in the schoolyard! These children know how to make their own fun during recesses, without excess material goods or electronics, but making the best out of what nature provides.

Mother’s Day in Malawi

20.11.2015 MALAWIHappy Mother’s Day from VOH Malawi! This is a very special holiday around the country and here at VOH it was no less so. As a national holiday, the children were able to spend the day with their house mothers and then, as an added bit of joy, they received a donation of ice cream to celebrate this special day with their special mum!

Recently, the mothers and aunties at VOH Mongu held a training time together where they reviewed “The Mother’s Handbook”. An emphasis was made on working in unity and communicating effectively. Our mothers and aunties enjoyed a communication activity where they had to describe a diagram for another person to draw. Much laughter abounded, as everyone wanted to take a turn! We are blessed with an awesome group of women who love our children unconditionally.

VOH Mwanza Visitors

20.11.2015 MWANZAAt VOH Mwanza we always love having visitors come see us. This past week we were happy to welcome Jade’s grandparents, Margaret and Bill, from Canada. They came to visit for a week and a half and spent time at the Village visiting each of the homes and praying with each family. What a blessing they were! They also shared some words of encouragement with our Mamas during our weekly housemother’s meeting and brought handmade PJ’S to help stock our clothing room. They have truly been a blessing these past few days and we wish them a safe journey back home to Canada.

VOH Zimbabwe Etiquette Lessons

20.11.2015 ZIMBABWEWe had a lot of fun with the preschoolers at VOH Zimbabwe when we held a special etiquette and grooming class. The lesson included basic manners and how to use a knife and fork. It was especially fun for the children when they got to test their new skills with a plate of sudza and beans!
