VOH Kitwe Greenhouse: This week at Villages of Hope

Check out what's been going on this week at Villages of Hope-Africa...

VOH Kitwe Greenhouse!

IMG_0038VOH Kitwe is thankful for the greenhouse that we were recently able to purchase thanks to a generous donation from a friend in Canada. We have successfully transplanted tomato seedlings and the plants are doing extremely well! The youth are working with Charles our gardener who was trained by the company who supplied the green house. Charles is passing his training onto the youth as part of the Kachimfya (Over comers) Youth Empowerment Program. They will learn gardening skills and grow food for themselves and enough to provide tomatoes for the children’s homes as well as to sell to VOH staff and at the nearby market. Part of the process will be to teach the students how to run a small agricultural business.

Hope Football Club

IMG_0041VOH Burundi is very happy and proud of our Hope Football Club. In only 6 months of experience, their improvement is evident. Last week, the HFC had a match against the Simba Stars Club, another club from the community. Our team was very impressive and we won 2-0!
All of the VOH Burundi children had fun and were proud of themselves. It is wonderful to see the children realize that they have many skills and abilities and to see them take pride in who they are and what they can achieve when not too long ago most were completely without hope for their lives or futures. We know great things are to come!

VOH Kenya Prepares for Christmas

IMG_0042VOH Kenya kids are getting an early start on Christmas cards and pictures for their sponsors! We had some Christmas tunes playing and had the kids making handprints and drawing and colouring Christmas pictures. We took their photos with paper snowflakes falling around them!
It was a nice break in the day and the kids enjoyed learning about common Christmas traditions in Canada. It was a day of smiles, laughter and fun!

VOH Malawi Mothers’ Day!

IMG_0045October 13th was Mother’s Day in Malawi and the teens at VOH Malawi organised a surprise party for the moms and aunties! The children and teens wanted to do something special to show their appreciation. Each mother was presented with a gift of Chitenge Material that said “Happy Mothers’ Day” and they were so excited they couldn’t wait to wrap the material around themselves and get their pictures taken!

VOH Mongu Birthday Celebration

IMG_0044Liz, one of the volunteers at VOH Mongu, recently celebrated her birthday. All of the Save A Life Center staff and mothers from the feeding program were excited to celebrate with her.
Everyone danced and sang and the children had a great time playing with the balloons and eating yummy chocolate cake. Villages of Hope is very thankful for every volunteer who give of themselves to be a blessing to the children and staff!

Grade 7 at VOH Mwanza

IMG_0043At VOH Mwanza the Grade 7 Grads have finished classes and are waiting to start Secondary School in the new year. While they wait, they are keeping busy helping at home with the younger children and also getting some down time to relax. They also have extra time to play with the younger children and that makes everyone really happy!
One of the graduates even took time out her day to help lead the staff in our daily morning devotional. It was wonderful to see her taking this initiative and to see the older children wanting to give back in whatever way that they can. We are thankful for the strong sense of family that exists at each Village of Hope.

Dentist Visits VOH Zimbabwe

IMG_0040Last week VOH Zimbabwe was visited by a local dentist who is a member of one of the local PAOZ churches. He has offered his dental services to Village of Hope free of charge. The checkups included helping us with age estimates for some of our children that came without knowing their birthdate or year. His gentle manner made it easy for the children to let him look at their teeth!
